Introducing John Prentice
(Guess Who's Coming to Dinner)
The Case for When You're Good to Mama (2):
"Ask any of the chickies in my pen, they'll tell you I'm the biggest mother... hen."
The Case for Introducing John Prentice:
Released 6 months after the Supreme Court's Loving v. Virginia decision, this film examines an interracial relationship and, more importantly, how even some who considered themselves liberal at the time struggled with their prejudice with regards to supporting one. Although dated (and slightly problematic) now, it was among the first films to portray an interracial marriage in a positive light. This early scene depicts Joanna 'Joey' Drayton (Katherine Houghton) describing her love for John (Sidney Poitier) before revealing all the details about them to her mother (Katherine Hepburn).
The Score: Introducing John Prentice 12, When You're Good to Mama 11
