Crane Kick
(The Karate Kid)
VS
Your Challenger
The Death of Queen Jane
(Inside Llewyn Davis)
The Case for Crane Kick (1):
The entire movie has built to this battle between Daniel (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny (William Zabka): Daniel believes that this victory is needed to finally get the bullies off his back. Though Johnny had previously shown some hesitation towards the directions of his instructor, he nonetheless followed them - and is shocked that Daniel continues to fight. In the end, Daniel uses a technique he was not taught, but observed to win the day.
The Case for The Death of Queen Jane:
Depressed, and having traveled from New York to Chicago for an audition that was supposed to have two more people, Llewyn (Oscar Isaac) attempts to perform the audition solo, singing the folk song The Death of Queen Jane. Despite putting his all into it, Bud Grossman (F. Murray Abraham) doesn't see the potential for a solo act - though he does end up offering to ad Llewyn to a group.
